Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru has successfully treated a 42-year-old Assamese woman diagnosed with a rare, reported condition, Leptospira Endometriosis. A team of doctors, led by Dr. Manisha Singh, Senior Consultant – Gynaecology & Reproductive Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru provided a comprehensive treatment, and the patient was discharged two days after undergoing surgery.

Patient Ketki (name changed) had been suffering from fever for over a month, along with difficulty in breathing, anaemia, abdominal pain and trouble passing urine. Her endometriosis further developed into an abscess following Leptospira (a spiral shaped bacteria) infection. It spreads through contaminated water, soil or animal urine, entering the body through cuts, abrasions, eyes, nose or mouth. It's a disease that can pass from animals to humans. Her daily activities were severely impacted, and despite visiting multiple hospitals, her symptoms persisted. To seek relief, and a thorough treatment she turned to Fortis, Bannerghatta Road. After a thorough medical evaluation, she was diagnosed with the Leptospira Endometriosis, a rare condition where an infection causes complications within the uterus. A 14 cms cyst filled with pus and a mass in the ovary were found. Understanding the severity of the condition, Dr. Manisha Singh recommended laparoscopic surgery to address the infection and related complications.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Manisha Singh, Senior Consultant Gynaecology& Reproductive Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, said, "The patient presented to us in a deteriorating health condition. She had pre-existing endometriosis, which had developed into an abscess after contracting the Leptospira infection. Given the gravity of the situation, we opted for laparoscopic surgery as it was the most effective way to remove the infected tissues. Laparoscopy, being minimally invasive, allowed us to remove the infected fallopian tubes and ovaries, preventing further complications while minimizing recovery time and scarring. The surgery lasted approximately for one hour, and we successfully removed the infected areas, including the cyst and mass.”

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, added, "At Fortis Hospital, we are committed to providing advanced and personalized care to our patients. The successful treatment of this rare case of Leptospira Endometriosis demonstrates our ability to effectively manage complex and rare conditions with cutting-edge medical expertise.
