The APASL Single Theme Conference and BUILD 3.0 (Brainstorming, Update and Innovations in Liver Diseases), brought together global leaders in hepatology to discuss advancements and strategies for improving non-transplant outcomes for patients with advanced liver disease. The three-day event, led by Dr. Akash Shukla, Director & Consultant Department of Hepatology at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital (HN RFH), was held at Aurika Hotel, Skycity, Mumbai.

The conference set the stage for insightful discussions, fostering global collaboration in the field of hepatology focused on the utilisation of the latest technology and strategies to improve outcomes of patients with advanced liver diseases in the ICU.

The conference also explored some of the most complex aspects of liver disease, including liver regeneration, even in patients with decompensated cirrhosis, offering a glimmer of hope for those battling advanced liver conditions. Experts delved into the liver-heart axis interplay in MASH (Metabolic Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) Cirrhosis, focusing on novel therapeutic targets and potential breakthroughs in treatment. A significant portion of the discussions centered on targeting cell death mechanisms—apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis—in MASH/MAFLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Fatty Liver Disease). Insights were also shared on neuro-cognitive decline in MASLD, emphasizing its significant implications for patient management.

Dr. Akash Shukla, Director & Consultant Department of Hepatology, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, said, “This conference served as a platform for international experts to collaborate and discuss the latest advancements in liver disease management. It’s crucial that we explore strategies for improving care for patients who are not transplant candidates.”

Dr. Tarang Gianchandani, CEO, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, added, “Liver disease is a growing global crisis, often diagnosed too late, leading to dire outcomes. It is the 10th leading cause of mortality in India. The area of liver disease therefore needs more awareness amongst people, the way we have for cancer and heart diseases. The expertise in AI-driven predictive analytics at HN RFH will allow us soon to identify liver disease before it reaches a critical stage, giving patients a real chance at recovery.”

During the three-day event, Dr. Dong Joon Kim from South Korea discussed the APASL Guidelines on QQL and palliative care in advanced liver diseases. Prof. Patrick S. Kamath from the USA elaborated on how to prognosticate patients with advanced liver disease beyond just scores. Dr. Ashwani Singal from Louisville, USA, shared insights on recent advances in prognostication and management strategies for alcoholic liver disease. Prof. Detlef Schuppan from Germany focused on a state-of-the-art lecture on wheat, gluten, and ATIs in health and disease. Among the prominent attendees were Dr. Dominique Valla from France, Dr. Julia Wendon from the UK, Dr. Necati Örmeci from Turkey, and Prof. K. Rajender Reddy, who were present on the occasion to share their insights on relevant topics. These distinguished experts led various sessions, presenting their groundbreaking research and insights on liver disease management while highlighting the latest advancements in therapies, diagnostics, and clinical care. Their discussions provided valuable learning opportunities and fostered collaboration within the global hepatology community.
