BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital becomes the first tertiary care hospital in Karnataka to sign MoU with BAPIO
BAPIO-British association of physicians of Indian origin, U.K. is the largest body representing doctors of Indian origin in the UK.
The Indo U.K. partnership is aimed at bridging the gaps in understanding of research, medical advancements, and creating training and exchange programs to benefit the trainees and both the countries.
BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, part of IHH Healthcare entered into collaboration with BAPIO and BTA (the educational arm of BAPIO) with the aim of developing and providing world-class training and exchange programs for doctors and nurses in India to meet the growing demands of effective and safe delivery of emergency care across the globe.
BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital hosted a conference on Tuesday, 20 September, at their Kengeri unit in collaboration with BAPIO, to discuss and explore avenues beneficial for both countries from the mutual exchange of ideas and clinical staff. The MoU will further aid in enhancing the education and training of healthcare staff through international mentorship therefore improving the quality of care provided to patients at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru.
Biju Nair, Cluster COO, Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Bengaluru and Prof Parag Singhal, Executive Director-BTA, National Secretary-BAPIO signed the memorandum of understanding in the presence of other dignitaries including Prof. Tamorish Kole, Founder Course Director – Emergency Medicine (BTA), Visiting Professor, University of South Wales (UK), and Immediate Past President, Asian Society for Emergency Medicine (ASEM); Prof. Dr. Bipin Batra, Radiologist, Chairperson, Assessment Panel & Internal Quality Assurance, BTA, Member of ASPIRE – AMEE, UK; Dr A M Kutappa, HOD - Critical Care and Anesthesia & Head of Academics, Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Bengaluru Cluster; Aparna V S, Cluster Head - Quality and Special Projects, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru; Joiston Perierra , Trade Advisor, British Deputy High Commission and Andrew Flemmings from British High Commissioners Office.

Dr A M Kutappa, HOD - Critical Care and Anesthesia & Head of Academics, Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Bengaluru Cluster commenting on the program inclusions said,” Our current cooperation with BAPIO includes emergency medicine training, conducting clinical meetings and rounds, programs in faculty exchange, joint research and nursing training and provision of simulation labs for our trainees enhancing their clinical expertise without any risk of patient harm. We are positive to expand and further our alliance with BAPIO in the future by adding more academic programs and specialty courses.”
Speaking on the Indo UK partnership, Prof Parag Singhal, Executive Director- BTA, National Secretary -BAPIO commented, “Providing patients with healthcare services which are effective, safe, patient-centered, timely, efficient, equitable, and delivered by professionals who have been trained in world class NHS hospitals is our end goal. Modules on patient safety are incorporated in the course curriculum enabling trainees to practice the same in real life hence improving patient outcomes.”
The persistent understaffing of the NHS in the UK has resulted in risk to staff and patient safety, both for routine and emergency care. According to recent study there is a shortage of 12,000 hospital doctors, and more than 50,000 nurses and midwives termed as “The greatest workforce crisis” in the history of the NHS. To mitigate this, as a part of solution; a framework agreement between the Government of India and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for collaboration on health care workforce was signed on July 2022. This outlines the key ambitions of the UK-India partnership on healthcare workforce, in particular around support for recruitment and training of Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, and other categories of healthcare professionals identified by both the participants. Similarly, this will result in upskilling and capacity building of Indian health workforce, which is much needed for Universal Health Coverage program.
Sharing his thoughts, Prof Tamorish Kole, Founder Course Director – Emergency Medicine (BTA), said “The Emergency care system is an essential part of universal health coverage and capacity building for Emergency Medicine through training doctors, nurses, EMTs is a step towards that goal. This program will definitely improve the care delivery and save many lives across the region.”
